Zidane, oh, Zidane! You Have Shamed Yourself and Failed Your Country!
[The Reflections of The Eternal Wanderer] Few possess the sublime skills of an attacking midfielder and playmaker such as Zidanes and it is no wonder for the past eight years since that momentous win in 1998 that the Algerian-born French star has been an important core player of the French international squad. He can be likened to a puppet master who is pulling the strings of play - creating as many chances in front to support the front strikers and doing as much to help at the back.

Lehmann named Germany No1
[uefa.com - FIFA World Cup] Reports in Germany suggested that Klinsmann had informed Kahn of the decision this morning, and although the German Football Association initially refused to comment, a statement from Klinsmann this afternoon said: "This has been the most difficult decision of my reign. Of course Oliver is disappointed but he proved himself a true sportsman." Kahn, who like Lehmann is 36, helped Germany reach the final of the last World Cup in Korea/Japan, where he was named the player of the tournament.

[The Global Game | World Football, Women's Football, Media, Culture] On a recent edition of the BBC’s World Football, Premiership referee Graham Poll affirmed that a yellow card is presently the maximum sanction for simulation. He dislikes the idea of retroactively punishing offenders, since not all games are reviewable from reverse angle, from the goal-cam lens and the plethora of other camera positions.

FA Go To FIFA To Deal With Divers
[State Of The Game] Current managers Bryan Robson and Mark Hughes both believe the problem has gotten worse since they played at the highest level and these days it can’t only be blamed on foreign players with such England regulars as Michael Owen and Joe Cole being renowned for going down easily under challenges. If the clubs and managers aren’t willing to stop the practice (who’s to say they don’t actively encourage it?) then it is the responsibility of the FA and FIFA to step in and implement laws worldwide to end the ridiculous spectacle of grown men playacting.

Fletcher Shuts Keane (and Mourinho) Up
[Samsies - updated whimsically] No offence to the good people of the Red Devils Fan Club (Dead Poet, Mr Humji, and yellowhandman included), but I never fancied the boys from Old Trafford, even when they were complete losers in the late 80s with Jim Leighton (the crappiest goalkeeper to ever come out from Scotland, wait a minute, he’s the ugliest too, and someone pray tell what’s that white creamy kor-yok that he perpetually had on his right brow?) and company. It got worse when they actually started winning things at the turn of the decade, starting with their European Cup-Winners-Cup triumph in Rotterdam back in 91, and the rest of the story I think you already know.

[Chelsea Rulz!!!] Its no secret but all the other 18 teams were supporting ManU in yesterdays game, cause Chelsea did have a 9 points lead over 2nd place Wigan and a win at Old Trafford would probably hand over the title to Chelsea some time in December. Bayern says Bye Bye to Ballack
[Chelsea Rulz!!!] All this makes it quite obvious that the Bundesliga champions Bayern will sell Ballack in January transfer window. I personally think he would go between 10 to 12 million pounds, considering that he would not get to play in the Champions Leagues for either Real Madrid or ManU, not that they are going really far in the competition which already has Chelseas name written all over the Cup.

[yellowhandman] I had expected him to leave at the end of the season, but his leaving at this crucial point in the season, when we've just beaten Chelski but have a big game in the Champions' League coming up, suggests that something bad must have happened. The club's official statement included positive words from Keano, Fergie and Gill, but that's probably just PR.

Championship League wrap: Inter Milan 1-1 Shakhtar Donetsk
[The Soccer Weblog - "Your ultimate guide to soccer" - Newcastle complete Owen transfer coup] The lack of home support barely troubled Inter who went ahead in the 13th minute when striker Alvaro Recoba beat Shakhtar keeper Jan Lustuvka with a precise shot through a group of players which went in at the far post. ustuvka pulled off a fine double-save to prevent Santiago Solari putting the home side ahead again and Tomas Hubschman turned a powerful shot by Adriano behind for a corner.

[The Flack] Tampa Bay Buccaneer owner/businessman Malcolm Glazer's quest to buy one of the most venerable names in all of pro sports -- Manchester United -- has hit unprecedented resistance in the UK (and elsewhere). He may look like an Irish leprechaun (is there any other kind?), but as an American -- and I believe an Orthodox Jewish-American -- his acquisition has prompted the kind of personal attacks rivaling the best that a resurgent anti-Semitic and anti-American Europe has to offer.

Herzog and De Meurons Allianz Arena
[ColumnNetwork.org] The new Allianz Arena football stadium in Munich, designed by Herzog and De Meuron, is a quite beautiful piece of work, which puts Norman Foster’s compromised new Wembley to shame on several fronts. For a start, it’s come in on time and on budget (for a quarter that of Wembley, actually), but also features innovations such as cashless payment, is acoustically brilliant, and its distinctive appearance has already been taken to heart by locals, who have dubbed it ‘the rubber dinghy’.

Is being Scottish bad for your health?
[Shuggy's Blogspot] Researchers at Edinburgh University revealed that an unknown "X-factor" - not linked to the usual suspects of poor diet, smoking, lack of exercise and poverty - appears to be responsible for those living in Scotland having a 50 per cent higher chance of getting the potentially fatal condition than people south of the Border."Interesting - although I'll reserve judgment: one piece of research I saw showed that people in Bearsden - a relatively prosperous Glasgow suburb - has health rates much the same as the South of England. In neighbouring Drumchapel - one of Glasgow's four peripheral council housing (I should say, housing association now) estates - one can expect to die 10 years earlier, on average.

Let's talk about MLS attendance
[Ramblings of a Soccer Junky] Yeah, you'll get more people at any sporting event with fireworks (MLB has known this for years) but with the smaller stadiums being built, the only way teams in LA, Columbus, Dallas and Chicago will be able to benefit from better attendance with fireworks is if they bump prices for the single game as they won't have thousands of empty seats to fill.

[Ground Control to Major Tom] Actually, I'd prefer CNOOC to offer US$17.5 billion instead and spend the remaining billion on a hostile takeover of Malcolm Glazer's Manchester United. And I wouldn't mind the new adminstrators renaming certain stands in Chinese or emphasizing the 'Red' in Red Devils.

Koeman bound for Benfica
[Football United] Koeman had long been touted as the most likely successor to Trapattoni, who chose not to guide Benfica into the Champions League, preferring to be close to his home and family in Italy. However, in recent days, the Dutchman had been only one name on a list of potential candidates which included former Olympique Lyonnais coach Paul Le Guen, Javier Irureta and Alberto Zaccheroni.

lacrosse - why is it popular?
[Most Valuable Network - Tennis Diary] Lacrosse has very strict rules about the dimensions of the stick. The webbing that holds the ball cannot be too deep because that would make it too easy for the attacker to hold onto the ball while fighting through wrap checks, slap checks, poke checks and body checks on their way to the goal.

US Wins in Salt Lake City
[WombatNation] While I wouldn’t say that Salt Lake City is rich with lots to do and see, there’s definitely enough to fill a weekend. There was even a great Chilean deli on Main Street in what appeared to be the ethnic district (at least 4 non-American oriented businesses within a single block).

Thurston Moore on mix tapes and mp3s
[clagnut - stick around why don't you] Dan Hill alerted me to this wonderful, but teasingly brief piece wherein Thurston Moore (need I really mention Sonic Youth?) waxes lyrical about mix tapes and their progeny: I also needed to hear these records in a more time-fluid way, and it hit me that I could make a mix tape of all the best songs...

USMNT 3 -0 Costa Rica
[Adventures Of Mike - Blog] The USA victory, coupled with qualifying victories by Mexico (2-0 in Guatemala) and Trinidad & Tobago (2-0 against Panama at home) puts the U.S. in a solid second-place position in the hexagonal with nine points after four games. The U.S. is one point behind Mexico, but five points clear of Guatemala, Panama and Trinidad & Tobago, who are all even with four points. Panama, the USA’s opponent on Wednesday is bringing up the rear with two points.

I love Van Basten
[chaotic intransient prose bursts] Going in against the traditional way of selecting players, Van Basten has become an oddity in the world of national team coaching by picking players purely on performance. He ignores celebrity ranking, income, age or experience. So far he has given 15 rookies a chance to prove themselves, telling them: “Je bent een goede voetballer, laat het zien.” (“You're a good player, now go and show it”). Yesterday, Van Basten dropped PSV's Van Bommel from the selection because he thought Van Bommel “wasn't good enough”.

Soccer Classics
[chaotic intransient prose bursts] I woke up at an unholy 4 am to watch the Champions League final between Liverpool and AC Milan (BBC report). With Liverpool having defied all odds in their run to the final, I was betting on a match that would be considered a classic in years to come. Damn, I love it when I get it right once in a rare while. When do you get a chance to see, live, an underdog score 3 goals in a span of 6 minutes to tie the game, see their goalkeeper fumble balls yet make two freak miracle saves and provide one of the most entertaining penalty keeping performances ever?

Liverpool and the Champions League
[LEVELHEAD.org] You see, the Champions League is a UEFA-sponsored tournament that includes the best clubs in European football. Memorial Cup 2005 Game Four: Crosby Survives
[Sportsjunkie.ca] I dont blame Ottawa for resorting to this tactic, this kid could be the most unstoppable player the CHL has ever seen. The blame here falls on the referee for allowing all of this to go on with his whistle firmly planted in his pocket. There were many calls that could have been made but its a blatant slash on a partial breakaway that will be replayed when talking about the abuse in this game.

Champions League Final
[Between the Covers] I knew as soon as AC Milan went first on the penalty shoot out, they would lose it. Liverpools goalkeeper must have studied Bruce Grobbelaars tactics - you should have seen him dancing around that goal. AC Milan didn't stand a chance. It's been the talk here all day.

Wizards lose to Earthquakes
[the ryan king] I think the Wizards weakness is lack of a good attacking central midfielder. Our two central midfielders, Diego Gutierrez and Kerry Zavagnin are both more defensive and possession minded, leaving the attack to our strickers and wingers. Tonight we had some great play up top from Wolff, Sealey and Arnaud and on the wings from Klein, Victorine, Jewsbury and Zotinca, but they are lacking support from an attacking midfielder who could tie them all together.
